Meursault – All Creatures Will Make Merry

Ever since Matthew first handed me a copy of Nothing Broke and I was absorbed into Meursault‘s layered, chaotic, distorted folk charms, I knew they were something quite special that go far above the Arcade Fire comparisons which must frustrate them. For some reason though, their release schedule seems to permanently coincide with my exams – so yet again this review is a month late.

All Creatures will make Merry is their second full length and fits in perfectly from where Neil Pennycook’s Edinburgh outfit left off with Pissing on Bonfires/Kissing With Tongues, with a sound finely poised  between folk, noise, and electronica – a balance that I think is found more consistently on this record than their debut.

The folk writing beauty that is behind Meursault is shown in the soft lullaby of Weather. But what makes them stand head and shoulders above the pretenders is summed up in Crank Resolutions as the electronic beeps and drums scatter, leaving the howling vocals to soar and drag the song’s beating heart into crescendo.
