The whole album sounds as if the played through the sun haze on a beach – it’s fuzzy, bright with catchy melodies, and doo-wah 50’s style vocals with enough reverb to surf on. You’ve got The Supremes, The Beach Boys, and The Ramones all rolled into one glorious sun-drenched record, glistening with standout tracks.
Boyfriend opens the record, with Bethany pining and jealous as she sings “The other girl is not like me, She’s prettier and skinnier, She has a college degree, I dropped out when I was 17” whilst backed by some the drums and melodies that could have come from Soundgarden in the 90’s.
Goodbye and Summer Mood are two stand out tracks for me, with Goodbye having more or a thumping steady beat with Bethany lamenting life’s problems, followed by Summer Mood slowing things down with the vocals hanging, suspending the song about the summer.
