Chet Faker – Terms and Conditions

What we have here is one of the best songs of the year. I’ve had my eye on Chet Faker for a little while, but it’s only now I’m getting around to checking out his music. The Melbourne-based artist is definitely on to something, if Terms and Conditions is anything to go by. The song immediately puts its head above the parapet with a wonderful arpeggiated melody – one that isn’t easily shaken off – before being joined by gentle percussion and starting a gradual swell towards an impressively-sized chorus that seems to appear from nowhere. This is very much a pop song at heart, even if its mid-tempo feel and thoughtful lyrics hint at something deeper, and it acts as a rather tantalising taster of the Australian’s forthcoming debut EP, which is out on March 26th and goes by the name of Thinking in Textures, which is probably a Ronseal title (i.e., it does exactly what it says on the tin) if its layered lead single is any indication. Mark the date on your calendar, folks – you don’t want to miss it.
