I’m getting a Depeche Mode-ish vibe from this song. I’m not entirely sure why. It may just be that Daniel O’Sullivan, who lends his vocals to the first cut to be taken from Manchester dance duo Stay+’s [Twitter/Facebook] debut EP, sounds like he’s a dead ringer for Dave Gahan. The comparison is inescapable, but in no way does the song sound like it’s in thrall to its influences. Slight nods can be detected here and there, of course, but on the whole this is very much their own creation. The name that the pair have chosen to record under is pronounced ‘Stay Positive’ and this is the maxim that has informed Guardian, a vibrant and uplifting track which was released as a single on Monday and is a tantalising taster of ‘Arem’, the EP which will follow on April 30th and be released in three formats: download, 12″ vinyl and – get this – ‘a special folded 50” download edition’. Yep. A poster EP, and a large one at that. The EP, which will feature four other songs as well as its lead single, is also set to include a 16-minute film entitled The Buzzer. Stay+ deserve acclaim for thinking outside the box, sure, but they make damn good music too.
