I would be writing this as an “Introducing” post as I was new to Marthas & Arthurs until a couple of weeks ago – but they first made a few ripples back in 2010 with the release of their debut 7″ single in Sally Started It All – “Re-Introducing” it is then. Much more important, anyway, is the music – with Marthas & Arthurs (bandcamp) offering folk-tinged vocal harmonies. Soft, pretty tunes.
There may be strings, flutes, pianos, drums, and birdsong on the record, but it is the soothing harmonious voices of the foursome – a habit they’ve picked up from the Mamas & the Papas, a band they’ve followed with more than the naming convention. There are definite folk twinges too, whether that is in the upbeat delight of Who Will Marry Me, or the delicate and catchy Shoot You Down. But it is when there is nothing but the voices as on Barberosophy when the songs become truly dramatic.
A track from this record is actually going to be on our Summer Days Through The Folkish Haze Vol.4…
