Pictures, to some, are only moments in time, and it’s thoughts like these that seem to have inspired the new video from Californian quartet The Miracals (Twitter/Facebook), in which they are literally framed, captured in photographs as they perform their song Pretend. They dabble in surf rock, which is inevitably going to earn their music some comparisons to earlier Beach Boys material, but at least they’re in good company. They say, ‘we used to be The Smiles, but all that changed once the Los Angeles Dental Academy had their way with us.’ The fact they even had that name is rather appropriate, when one considers the nature of this new song. It’s quite upbeat, but things aren’t all sunshine and roses: the song paints a picture of a relationship that once flourished but has now broken up: ‘I swear I’d love you more than I did back then / Let’s just pretend that we’re in love’. This song is taken from a new EP that is set for release in the summer – yeah, when else did you expect them to be putting out new songs? It comes after the band promised they’d record a new EP if they got 1500 ‘likes’ on their Facebook page. That has been accomplished, and now we can’t wait to hear the thing. You should be excited too. Oh, did we mention that you can get their two EPs for free if you sign up to their mailing list? Get on it.
