Peter Wilson has been under the radar for a few years now, but he’s still been keeping rather busy. Since the release of I Never Thought This Day Would Come, the artist also known as Duke Special [Facebook/Twitter] has been involved in, and released things from, all sorts of projects: there have been two b-sides albums, music composed for plays and films, and inspired by books and even photographs. Yep, Wilson’s spent a while doing less-than-conventional things. However, while he hasn’t been a ‘mainstream’ concern for a few years, his new album looks set to change that. He’s been consistently releasing things for a few years, but his first ‘commercial’ album since 2008 is called Oh Pioneer – the video up above is a teaser of what to expect – and arrives on June 18th. The lead single is a restrained but quite impressive song called Punch of a Friend (*free download klaxon*), which stays true to Wilson’s knack for unusual and bracing arrangements while wrapping everything up in a disarmingly infectious melody, with its lyrics every bit as incisive as we’ve come to expect from him. He’s always been known for thinking outside the box, and it’s great to have his delightfully old-fashioned pop back – though, strictly speaking, it never really went away.
