DIIV – Doused

One of the most exciting prospects of 2012 are a band who are clearly influenced by what’s gone before, but not in thrall to it, instead putting their own spin on the genre of music in which they operate, to produce something visceral and thrilling. Introducing DIIV (they were formerly Dive, but a Belgian industrial band got there first, by a margin of, er, 20 years or so), whose post-punk stylings have already earned them quite a following. The first track to be lifted from the Brooklyn quartet’s first full-length is entitled Doused, and manages to balance brooding, claustrophobic intensity (not to mention some particularly suitable lo-fi production) with an inviting sense of melody and a sense of reckless abandon. All of the aforementioned things are going to take them places, especially now that there is an album on the horizon. In keeping with the band’s penchant for odd misspellings of words, it is called Oshin. It arrives on June 25th via Captured Tracks. We are excited about it; you should be too, especially if punchy post-punk is your kind of thing.
