The Blue Walrus

Introducing: Apple Rabbits

Apple Rabbits

There are some records that I sit on for far too long, but then again sometimes when you put it on again with fresh ears with the sun darting through the window you can experience it in a whole new light and love it even more. And that’s exactly what I’ve done with the Kilburn State from Apple Rabbits (twitter).

Apple Rabbits is the current name for Jay Fisher’s latest musical offering who has been putting out critically acclaimed records in one form or another for nearly two decades. I Could Not Care Less is the first single from the record and introduces his his soft and soulful side rather elegantly – it is a just beautiful summer jam. And for any Americans reading – that is the phrase, “I could care less” means the opposite of what you think it does.

One style is not enough for Apple Rabbits though, with the understated and almost lo-fi One Rolls Over another favourite of mine. Still soft, but the clean ahead of the beat bass-kick keeps the record rolling onwards to find its groove. He doesn’t shy away from experimentation or classical nuances either though, with the strings on the otherwise glacial Aeroplane a luxurious and unexpected delight.

Something a little different for a summer afternoon.

Apple Rabbits – Kilburn State is out now on Kilburn State Records.
