Today, Australian rockers Rapids [Twitter/Facebook] release their debut EP in the UK, and in celebrating this momentous occasion, they’ve decided to be quite generous and make the whole thing available to stream via Soundcloud. It’s a rather diverse listen, and the band’s eagerness to avoid being put in any sort of genre box has imbued the EP with an impressive amount of energy. Since they came to our attention with the striking video for Cut Fast last month, we’ve been hoping that there would be music of similar quality on the EP, and fans of that track won’t be disappointed, even if the EP as a whole showcases a more psychedelic side to their output. There are dashes of The Flaming Lips and Animal Collective here and there (the influence of the latter band is more noticeable on Shoppe Sorry than anywhere else), but Rapids definitely want to forge their own path, and the fact that they’ve got a brand-new EP arriving in October should be cause for celebration, especially when they’ve arrived on our shores with something this good.
