EMBERS - Tunnel Vision

Sometimes, intensity works. You know that feeling you get when you feel like you’ve been punched in the gut by a piece of music that has connected with you in some deep and meaningful way? Embers [Twitter/Facebook] are good at this, too, but the strength of their connection lies in the sheer overwhelming power of their music. The Manchester quartet are pretty brave; not only have they decided to self-release the single, they’re well able to infuse their songs with a pop sensibility (underneath all the searing noise and screeching guitars of Tunnel Vision, an early demo that’s now been recorded properly in an actual studio, there are a number of massive hooks) whilst packing it with the kind of apocalyptic thrills that are impossible to ignore or resist – something that’s difficult to do.

Their debut single is a super-limited 7″, comprising of the aforementioned song and a brand-new, more uptempo, song entitled Sins Unknown, featuring some accomplished, tom-heavy drumming, buzzing guitars and a muscular, synth-backed chorus. These two songs are immediate and instantly striking, radiating a staggering confidence that is put into its proper context when it’s mentioned that the band released their first recorded material all of 10 months ago. They’ve come a long way since then, and when the single’s released on September 24th, their rise should begin in earnest. These songs are not for the faint-hearted: sometimes overwhelming, but brilliantly so. They don’t do things by halves, and it’s an approach that works incredibly well for them.
