Lightning Love – Blonde Album

Lightning Love - Blonde Album

This is one I came across a fair while ago but is proving remarkably difficult to wash off my clothes.

Michigan based Lightning Love (twitter/facebook) produce the kind of indie-pop that needs the ‘pop’ part written out in bright pink neon, maybe superimposed over a close-up image of a pair of faded denim shorts and a pair of roller skates. But don’t be fooled, under that saccharin sweetness lies something just a little bit harsh.

You see Lightning Love use their sing-song melodies and indier-than-thou chord progressions to bury their way into your skull and their subtly subversive lyrics let them set down roots.  Their songs deal with relationships that are, each in their own special way, utterly broken, although the shiny veneer means that it takes a while for you to realise.

That’s about as on the nose a metaphor as you could possibly ask for.

So Lightning Love: tribute to the anxious innocence of teenage love? Devious pop subversion? Straight faced beach bum indie-pop? Either way at least it’ll inject a little sunshine into this dreary time of year.
