Picks for 2013: Tashaki Miyaki

Tashaki Miyaki

Dream pop doesn’t come any dreamier then the mind altering shoe gaze styling’s of Los Angles based duo Tashaki Miyaki. The bands formation is a timely story of spontaneity after singer Lucy and drummer Rocky came together after an impromptu late night jam session in a friends studio just over two years ago. Their sound encapsulates the idle and leisurely summertime feel of the endless hours of wasting time in the sun. Long siesta, bike rides, carless fun and forgotten summer romances. Lucy has the look and charm of the girl next door and the alluring ethereal vocals of an angle to match. Their music is a delicate fairytale mix of short and sweet melodies, lo-fi murmuring vocals and a linger of mediating percussion. They express a type of melancholy with a dawn of reverbed warmth that feels like a serenading dark lullaby. Their songs are sweetly spun sugar coated ballads that are set up with the structure of a 60’s doo-wap pop hit but they have a sad and sinister alluring exterior that you can’t help be wary of but at the same time drawn to.

It seems that their spell has projected a stream of excitement with online music fans. After catching the attention of the music blogosphere for their Everly Bothers cover EP which included their refined cover of “All I Have to Do Is Dream” the band carried on this success with another mesmerising 5 track EP of original spellbinding material. Since then however the band have been on and off the hype radar trough out 2012, proving to be somewhat of a mystery. Their main source of musical outlet is trough their Bandcamp page where both EP’s are available to buy and stream.

Their release this August with London based record label Luv Luv Luv has steered them in the right direction for 2013 with their first official single and double A side, the bewitching and delicate “Tonight” / “Best Friend”. The band has spoken of recording and releasing a debut album in 2013, a step up hopefully that should take the band from ambiguity to positive critical acclaim but as of yet a release date is still unknown.

(Ed’s note: Tashaki Miyaki’s cover of INXS’ Never Tear Us Apart also made it onto our opening 22tracks playlist)
