The Blue Walrus

Five albums to watch out for this summer

Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool

There is a never-ending stream of great new music being released both here in the UK and abroad, and the next few months have some very exciting albums and EPs on the horizon. Today, we’ve collaborated with rural Warwickshire’s excellent Gospel Oak studio (Facebook/Twitter) to highlight some of the records we’re most looking forward to having on heavy repeat in the coming months.

Wolf Alice – My Love Is Cool

We’ve been big supporters of Wolf Alice for the last couple of years, and Ellie Rowsell & co are finally releasing their debut album next week! They treated us all to a preview listen through NPR earlier this week, and the wait sounds like it has been worth it. Just like the north London band’s back catalogue, the album is a mix of genres from the fan favourite ‘You’re A Germ’ to the breathless ‘Lisbon’, and we’re already putting it in the “instant classic” category.

My Love Is Cool will is released on 22 June via Dirty Hit Records

Gengahr – A Dream Outside

Another band we’ve been pushing from their first single is Gengahr, and they too have their debut LP out this month. The album is filled with deceptively catchy tracks from start to finish, swirling with perfect harmonies and sumptuous choruses that are will make an ideal soundtrack to the UK’s hazy summer months. It’s more than a summer record though, with its soft guitars and sunny disposition belying an almost psychedelic darker soul, reflected in the lyrics on songs like ‘She’s A Witch’.

A Dream Outside is released on 15 June via Transgressive Records

Years & Years – Communion

Years & years have consistently released some of the most exciting singles over the last year, and this summer sees them finally release the album for which we have long been waiting. Ever since we first heard Real we’ve been hooked, with the three-piece offering both the soft and beautiful on tracks like Memo, to the 80s-influenced dancefloor classic like King.

Communion is released on 10 July via Interscope Records

Kwabs – Love + War

Kwabs is one of those artists where you’re instantly hooked after just the first few bars of early tracks like Last Stand, and after two years of waiting we’re finally going to get a album in the form of Love + War. The Britsh-Ghanian artist spans a variety of genres, lending his soulful voice on pop songs like the internationally acclaimed Walk to dancefloor hots like Fight For Love, and we’re hoping for more of the same on his full length.

Love + War is released on 11 September on Atlantic Records

The Maccabees – Marks To Prove It

The Maccabees continue to be one of the UK’s best bands, and after three fantastic previous albums, Marks To Prove It sounds like it will once again be a thrilling ride. We’ve only heard a couple of tracks from the record so far, but the title track is a breathless rollercoaster filled with harmonies and prog-like tempo changes that we have come to love.

Marks To Prove It is released on 31 July via Fiction Records
