White Lies (Jack) – Obelisk Arena – London
1. Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Latitude festival across the Arenas (Obelisk, Uncut, Comedy, Theatre, Literary and Poetry, Film & Music) and why?
Wow, so many acts I would love to see this year. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Grace Jones, Spiritualized and Bat For Lashes are the big names for me. Also, there’s a few acts who I have close ties with through my Chess Club record label and promotions, who are brilliant, and they are Post War Years and Kurran and the Wolfnotes.
2. What aspect of Latitude Festival interests you the most and why?
Colourful sheep. Stages in the forest. Boat rides. Because there aren’t many festivals I know where you can enjoy such pleasures.
3. What can people expect you to bring to the festival and do you have anything special planned?
I think we’ll be aiming to fill the stage with our performance, and hopefully rouse some emotion with our songs. I don’t think we’ll have too many fancy gimmicks in the show but I know we’ll play with 100% commitment and conviction. And when we do that we always have a great show. We also have a fantastic slot and we’ll be making the most of it, and hopefully channeling our nerves to a good use!
4. If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t playing with White Lies I think I’d be searching for a different creative outlet. I take my photography pretty seriously, and I’ve also just got into making short films, with the aid of my trusty super 8 camera. Although without White Lies I probably wouldn’t have such interesting people and places to capture, so who knows!
5. What do you always bring to a festival?
So much underwear it’s obscene. And Frosties cereal bars.
6. Have you been to Latitude before, and if so, what has your favourite performance been?
We were lucky enough to play Latitude last year, and stay for pretty much the whole weekend. I really enjoyed Crystal Castles set in the middle of the forest, and also The Do’s set there too.
7. Do you have any festival tips for those in attendance at Latitude?
Eat lot’s of food there, it seems to be much better than the usual festival fodder. Explore the forest a bit too, it’s an amazing place to be after dark and definitely take a boat ride.
8. What is your favourite colour Sheep?
The purple ones last year looked like they were having the best time.
Fiona O’Mahony – Sharpwire – Outdoor Theatre – Farnham, Surrey via Lisbon
1. Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Latitude festival across the Arenas (Obelisk, Uncut, Comedy, Theatre, Literary and Poetry, Film & Music) and why?
Will tuckett’s Faeries. He has just directed our show Finkelstein’s Castle and will be good to hang out, drink beer oh and see his show of course.
2. What aspect of Latitude Festival interests you the most and why?
‘Going down to the woods today’ in seach of a big surprise.
3. What can people expect you to bring to the festival and do you have anything special planned?
Fantastic, utterly unique, mind-meltingly multi-tasking shows, a big yellow sleeping bag and a 24 pack (is this allowed?).
4. If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?
Weeping, wailing, bemoaning…or at home staying dry.
5. What do you always bring to a festival?
Baby wipes and my butler!
6. Do you have any festival tips for those in attendance at Latitude?
Go down to the woods in search of a big surprise!
7. What is your favourite colour Sheep?
Bleach blonde.
Pippa Evans – Cabaret Arena – London
1. Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Latitude festival across the Arenas (Obelisk, Uncut, Comedy, Theatre, Literary and Poetry, Film & Music) and why?
I am looking forward to seeing my good friends School of Night, who will bringing the spirit of Ken Campbell to the festival and I can, without a doubt, say they will be awesome!
2. What aspect of Latitude Festival interests you the most and why?
I liked the quote last year that “If Radio 4 were to do a festival, this would be it”. I am hoping there will be interactive Archers and Desert Island Disks. I am hoping to find at least one stall dedicated entirely to hummus
3. What can people expect you to bring to the festival and do you have anything special planned?
Yes – there will be singing along involved. I like a good old knees up and if you like a bit of old fashioned entertainment – I am your gal!
4. If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?
What do you mean by “this”? If you mean answering this questionnaire, I would be tapping away at the new Edinburgh show. If you mean “the festival” I would be trying to blag a ticket to get in anyway. And if you mean “comedy” oh well, that is hard. I have done so many jobs to support me in comey, I would have a range to choose from – I could go back to wearing a sandwich board on Kings Street, Hammersmith, if I was lucky. Or find seasonal work as an Elf in Harrods. That was fun – free cookies all day long!
5. What do you always bring to a festival?
Wet wipes. And an inflatable mattress. And a friend so I don’t get lonely.
6. Have you been to Latitude before, and if so, what has your favourite performance been?
No – I am a Latitude virgin. EXCITING TIMES.
7. Do you have any festival tips for those in attendance at Latitude?
Don’t drink any liquids so you never need to use the loo. You will collapse at some point, but then you get to sleep in the First Aid ten. You wouldn’t have to bring any bedding with you at all!
8. What is your favourite colour Sheep?
I like the ones that look like they have been graffitied.
Yes, Giantess (Jan Rosenfeld) – Sunrise Arena – Boston, USA
1. Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Latitude festival across the Arenas (Obelisk, Uncut, Comedy, Theatre, Literary and Poetry, Film & Music) and why?
I’m super excited to catch Mew – I’ve never seen them live and am really interested in how epic they could potentially sound in an arena.
2.What aspect of Latitude Festival interests you the most and why?
The setting – I’ve already got beautiful images floating around in my head.
3. What can people expect you to bring to the festival and do you have anything special planned?
We’re going to start a disco in the middle of the woods. We might even have a very special cover thrown in there.
4. If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?
Probably writing for newspapers and magazines.
5. What do you always bring to a festival?
Always bring a huge bottle of water. Half for drinking, half for spraying people.
6. Have you been to Latitude before, and if so, what has your favourite performance been?
Never been! So pumped!
7. Do you have any festival tips for those in attendance at Latitude?
Don’t you have to take a boat to get there? Don’t miss that boat!!
8. What is your favourite colour Sheep?
Absolutely blue.
Richard Milward – Literary Arena – Middlesbrough
1. Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s Latitude festival across the Arenas (Obelisk, Uncut, Comedy, Theatre, Literary and Poetry, Film & Music) and why?
Spiritualized, Regina Spektor, Bishi, Wild Beasts – I’ve seen Bishi and Wild Beasts before and love Spiritualized and Regina, also looking forward to the comedy. It was cracking in 2007, but mostly looking forward to milling about, running into things I’d never expected. It’s all bound to be a treat!
2. What aspect of Latitude Festival interests you the most and why?
I like how it’s easy to wander from stage to stage, so it’s difficult to miss things you want to see. Plus there’s fun to be had round the clock, depending on what you’re into. It seems like an intimate festival, and yet it brings in huge bands – it really is the best festival I’ve been to, so far.
3. What can people expect you to bring to the festival and do you have anything special planned?
I like putting on a bit of a performance, so I read my novel (‘Ten Storey Love Song’) with a psychedelic cartoon cardboard block of flats on my head, some author’s readings, I find, can be a little stale – ie, I’m aware most audiences have a short-ish attention span when it comes to hearing someone read from their novel, so I like having a bit of a laugh with it. If I’m enjoying myself on stage, hopefully people in the audience will enjoy it too.
4. If you weren’t doing this what would you be doing?
Probably scribbling away in my shady bedroom, missing all the sunshine.
5. What do you always bring to a festival?
I think you can’t fall off if you’ve got wellies and suntan lotion for the two extremes of festival weather!
6. Have you been to Latitude before, and if so, what has your favourite performance been?
I performed at Latitude 2007, it was a blast! I loved Gruff Rhys – especially how he went to town with the backdrop of the Air Cabin crew. It was mind-blowing, really psychedelic, and hadn’t heard much of his solo stuff before.
7. Do you have any festival tips for those in attendance at Latitude?
Get there early, have a good wander about, because every corner has some sort of buzz to it which can be overlooked if you don’t venture far enough.
8. What is your favourite colour Sheep?
Er, scarlet red would be a buzz, on the backdrop of green green grass. It would tickle your retinas!
