Magic Wands, who have been featured on both the summer and last electro mix tapes here on TBW released an EP last month on Young & Lost Club (BUY) that deserves a little write up on these pages (and we have a competition to win it on vinyl as well).
The dream pop wonder of Teenage Love and eminently danceable favourite (and heavily remixed) Black Magic are both included on the EP after being given a little spruce by producer John Hill.
They are both great tracks, but they have been on heavy rotation round at Walrus Towers for the last few months, so more new material would have been good. But the new tracks make this worthwhile buy.
Kiss Me Dead is dreamy shoegaze that rolls around your head for hours like a sunnier version of The Kills debut.
Warrior is more upbeat and definitely danceable along the same lines as Magic Wands with a storming 4/4 rhythm cutting all the way through, with a rounded bassline but most importantly catchy as fuck.
Starships is where you can feel the John Hill influence (it has a little bit of Lykke Li about it). It’s got the slower pace of Teenage Love but shows of a slightly darker side of the duo without losing their pop-styled cosmic influence.
If you don’t already own any Magic Wands records then this is an absolute must, but even if you do Warrior and Kiss Me Dead make this worthwhile while we all wait for the album. Plus you might always win a copy if you’re UK based…
