Following my review of the Stars of Sunday League EP Launch at the beginning of this month, you may remember a casual promise to keep you up to date with what Euan’s folky friends are up to. Well, what follows are updates about a couple of London’s finest folksters, who I’m very much liking at the moment.
Before that, though, I’d like to point you towards an article I wrote recently about a change in the way a lot of London folk gigs are operating these days – notably Laura Marling & Friends at the Royal Festival Hall and the Stars of Sunday League EP Launch. You can read the article here, and it may well be of interest if folk floats your boat.
Anyway, back to the artists at hand…
First up, we have that lovely and always amusing gentleman Olly The Octopus‘s latest project, in the form of a band titled the Bronze Medallists. Taking the poetic and established lyrical quality of Olly’s solo pursuits, Bronze Medallists come together to give a strangely sophisticated multi-layered sound with impressive depth and a mouth-wateringly catchy feel to it. Very talented gents, who The Blue Walrus will gladly be stalking in the coming months.
And then there’s the wonderful A Gun Rack?, also known as Mark Gamble, who brings lovely little acoustic ditties about strange and wonderful topics to the table. His solo folky anthems are uber-creative, and even though there are only rough demos up on his MySpace page at the moment, I recommend having a quick listen and seeing what you think. I’m looking forward to hearing some proper recordings, and maybe if you head on over to MySpace, add him and then bother the poor fellow, he’ll get some up there quickly and I won’t need to get upset. Convinced yet? I hope so.
That’s all for now my folky folks, but there’ll be more to come very soon.
I will hopefully have some proper recordings in October, Lauren :)
And can I just give credit to Del Bremner for the photo of me. You can see his other stuff here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/olddelpasso
A Gun Rack? is bumtastic.
