“Just let the comets lead the way,” sing Fanfarlo on this album’s fourth track, ‘Comet’, and indeed this is perhaps the best advice to be given to listeners of the band. Here is a group of musicians full of colour, beauty and energy in its melodic offerings, and the London five-piece are totally awe-inducing and reverent in their refusal to stop at boundaries that other less eclectic bands have drawn.
Fanfarlo easily slip a unique and raw vocals depth alongside violin melodies that send shivers down your spine. Their songs range from indie-folk-pop tunes like ‘Luna’ to deeper rooted folky tracks like ‘I’m A Pilot’ to purely alternative rock ballads like ‘Drowning Men’, and their overall sound possesses that same epic and accessible quality that has made bands like Noah And The Whale such a mesmerising and beautiful widespread success.
Each song on ‘Reservoir’ is totally individual but instantly recognisable as a Fanfarlo track. Their tales of unkept love and unfaltering belief are heartbreaking at times, and the band exhibit incredibly gorgeous storytelling but emotion-oriented lyrics. Even electronic-feeling in places with tracks like ‘Fire Escape’, Fanfarlo boast the most genuine feel of diversity I’ve experienced in a long time. And, on top of all that, they make really excellent use of clapping.
‘Reservoir’ is elegantly-crafted, innately addictive and completely worth a listen. Whether you buy it, download it or listen online, you only need to feast your ears on the creative genius that is Fanfarlo to become completely hooked.
Ah your opening paragraph is great and everything but it’s just that he sings “just let the comets lead the way”… The album is really beautiful though I love it so so much
Ooooh. My bad. Tis adjusted now, and luckily the rest of my review still makes sense! Thanks for the heads up :)
Hey I was listening to fanfarlo, as I often do! and remebered that I left this comment and I thought oh man i must have sounded like a douche bag but thankfully it wasn’t that bad haha have you gotten to see them?
Yeah I was lucky enough to see them at Field Day this year (in the lovely sunshine before the rain and hay fights and all). Great band. Where did you see them?
I saw them at their sellout Bush Hall gig :). Fantastic, fantastic band.
