My interest in Goldhawks was sparked by Tim’s recommendation back here, and so when I heard they would be visiting Norwich last Sunday, I made sure I was available. After a weekend spent in the capital, riding the tube and continuously passing the road that gave the boys their name, it really seemed a natural progression to end my Sunday in the confines of one of Norwich’s most out of the way venues for a band recommended by my editor and who sound just a bit too good to be true on their MySpace. I just had to know – are they really that good live?
The first thing that struck me when I got to B2, a usual haven for local unsigned bands, is that there were an astonishingly small number of people in the venue considering how brilliant and well-established Goldhawks are. I arrived in time to see final support act The Barlights play, and then Goldhawks ascended to the stage. Until this point, they had been standing in the audience, sipping on the beers from their rider. Nice to see such upcoming faces acting so down to earth.
The performance, as I had hoped, was amazing. New single ‘Running Away’ was a definite highlight, and the only genuine criticisms of the night lie with the promoters – Goldhawks had a ridiculously short set of 30 minutes and considering just how great and how upcoming these guys are, the venue should have been bursting at its relatively sizeable seams. After a chat with the tour manager, however, I discovered the boys hope to return to Norwich next year, this time at the Arts Centre. This was an energetic and talent-heavy show from a band that is bound to be massive in 2010. Goldhawks come highly recommended from me as well as Tim. Remember when Tim and I last passionately agreed a band was great? It was Mumford & Sons back here – and now they have billboards and TV ads. So take it from us, head on over to the Goldhawks MySpace page and have a gander; you won’t be disappointed.
