I’ve had my eye on Gypsy and The Cat for a little while now after the were featured on the last Kitsuné Maison release, but had neglected to write them up on here until prompted by Young & Lost sending over the amazing Crystal Fighters remix I’ve posted below. STEEP remix (oops – sorry about the mixup).
They produce some of the catchiest sunglazed synth-pop around. Yes comparisons with Empire of the Sun are obvious, but Gypsy & The Cat are more than that, they offer more depth and variation and don’t have that ridiculous get up and space theme.
The Australian duo layer their sound with acoustic and live instruments alongside the programmable electronics producing what The Guardian says they describe as “semi-acoustic chillwave”. Whatever you describe them as, this is infectious, blissful pop to laze through those summer afternoons.
