I featured Oh No Oh My‘s I Have No Sister on our Best of 2006 Mixtape at the end of the first year of this blog’s life (back when their name had two exclamation marks), but half a decade later the Austin four-piece are finally back with People Problems on Moelleux Records.
The album is spotted with unashamed pop gems on a summer’s breeze that play to your inner child. Walking Into Me and You Were Right expose the band’s upbeat but mellow soul from the off, but the albums shows much more depth with No Time For Talk feeling like an old Eels record swooning in love with a clean and respectable 60s jam.
The fragile vocals above some more upbeat songwriting such as There Will Be Bones offer easy comparisons with Other like The Shins, but then with everything stripped out but an acoustic guitar such as on I Don’t Know and Should Not Have Come To This they manage to create something quite precious and beautifully wistful.
The album isn’t perfect, with the odd song towards the end not living up to the promise of earlier tracks, but these are minor blips on a wonderful sophmore release from a band that have always deserved far more attention than they’ve received.
Oh No Oh My are on a short UK tour right now having played Brixton Windmill (London) and Leeds Oporto over the last couple of days. If you want to catch them live…
