My latest music discovery is Hero and Leander, an ambient indie pop band from London. The group formed last year from the remnants of successful indie outfit NeatPeople and is starting to make waves with their unique sound and impressive live shows.
Releasing their debut EP in the summer, the band are offering ‘Una’ as a special free download. The enjoyable track is a union of indie pop and dreamy ambience, a mix which works surprisingly well.
The band employs an impressive array of instruments, making good use of piano and violin to create the whimsical and atmospheric sound that accompanies their basic light hearted melodies. In ‘Una’, simple steady verse riffs are permeated by echoing guitars picks and the delightful dueting vocals of Emily Sills and Gary Cansell, which seem carefully constructed and joyfully melodic.
Despite the slightly typical lyrical content (dealing with the inability to tell someone you love) it is a charming track and certainly worth the time to download. With similarities to Captain, Camera Obscura and Arcade Fire, the band is certainly one to look out for in the coming months.
See them live with the fantastic Arthur Rigby and the Baskervylles: Enterprise, Camden 17th June.
