Tangled in a sea of anthemic, melodramatic power pop Spector are a difficult band to track down on the internet. Their website hosts only their debut single Never Fade Away, which was released yesterday on Luv Luv Luv Records; home to pop-indie goddess Florence and the Machine. Online elusiveness is a bit of a risky move in this techno age but not when your first released single sounds like this. It doesn’t seemed to have harmed Spector whose single launch at Efe’s in Dalston on June 2nd was packed out to full capacity (with me busting some moves at the front, I might add).
Never Fade Away crams all the nostalgia of the 80s, especially the drums fairly reminiscent of Joy Division’s Atmosphere, whilst still holding aloft the baton for a new sound in the noughties. For a debut single, this song boasts focused intent. It’s somewhat an ultimatum, which is enhanced by Fred McPherson’s deep yet joyfully optimistic tones. On a side note, you may know McPherson’s name from former bands Les Incompetents and Ox. Eagle. Lion. Man.
Never Fade Away is definitely meant to be the final song on the setlist. It is a magnificently epic crowd pleaser, which incorporates echoing drums, tender and sincere lyrics with gentle synths. It’s the type of song that makes you drunkenly clasp anyone in the immediate vicinity whilst swaying, clapping along and realising that life is great.
Never Fade Away 7″ is available at Rough Trade and via Luv Luv Luv Records now with a digital release coming next week (27th June).
Nice write up – nice track…
