I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for those soft lullabies from the likes of Bill Withers and Otis Redding, and that is exactly what you get with Michael Kiwanuka (Facebook/Twitter) whose debut EP came out on Communion a couple of weeks ago.
Kiwanuka is London born, but with roots in Uganda and has had a hand in making some pretty varied tunes – from being a session guitarist with Labrinth, to being the producer behind Tinie Tempah’s Pass Out. But it is his softer solo projects that has caught my attention with his rootsy soul voice over stripped-back soft guitar as in the City Sessions or Black Cab Sessions videos below or strings and brass on the record. It’s easy, soulful and beautiful to sit-back and listen to in the sunshine.
