There’s an interesting kind of symmetry to the way in which Little Comets are ending their year: in the same way that they started it, by releasing some new music. Their Worry EP arrives on December 12th, and from what I’ve heard of it so far, it doesn’t seem like the trio sound any worse for wear after the departure of drummer Mark Harle in May. The title track was unveiled in October, and it’s now been followed by the another of the new songs on the EP, the absolutely beautiful, semi-acoustic track, His Thunder. Evoking memories of Bombay Bicycle Club’s second album, Flaws, it’s a clear indication of the band’s intentions to move on from their old sound. The ‘kitchen-sink indie’ that could be found on January’s debut, In Search of Elusive Little Comets, has been put to one side for a moment, the focus instead being placed on Robert Coles’s excellent voice – he sounds like he’s in better vocal form than ever, his powerful tones carrying the song to its uplifting conclusion. His Thunder is a contradictory song, as gentle as it is powerful, but these contradictions work wonderfully and point towards the various different avenues the band could head down for their second album, also hinting at said album being a rather exciting prospect.
