Perennial Walrus favourite Gabriel Bruce [Facebook] is back with a double EP (yes, that is a thing that exists), entitled Dark Lights Shine Loud / A Brief and Selfish Lover, and the entire thing is available to listen to via SoundCloud below. It’s an impressive step up from his earlier material, taking what’s gone before and building on it. The two-part EP is comprised of two album tracks (the first material to be taken from the debut long-player, which arrives later in the year), and three demo recordings. Although it sounds a little disjointed on paper, the five songs gel surprisingly well, and the ferocious lead track has some fitting visuals to go along with it. The fact that Bruce has a fine set of pipes on him has been inescapable, and as his sound has started to mature, so too have his singing styles; it’s not just the music he’s making that is diverse. His sound dabbles in darkness and melancholy, but it is his wonderful way with a tune that stands out most of all. The EP is a tantalising taster of what’s to come, and we’d be lying if we said we weren’t feeling just a little impatient for the debut. Bring it on.
