There are various cues as a music blogger that you can’t help but notice when you are confronted with a new band or artist – annoyingly good looking? been on a TV pop talent show? have a soft-shot video that shows their “sensitive” side? All things where my pigeon-holing mind whirs into action and screams at me to turn away, but despite myself, I decided to give Matt Corby a listen – and I’m very pleased I did.
He’s released a few tracks on the Communion compilations and a couple of EPs in the past and he’s just signed to Atlantic, but most importantly he just writes beautiful and fragile pop songs. Whether it is just him and a piano, or with a full band of instruments it’s effortlessly disarming.
