“This is the saddest song I’ve ever written, and I borderline hate it.” So says the frontwoman of London-via-Bulgaria ‘junk jazz’ trio Drop Out Venus [Twitter/Facebook]. It’s not exactly a ringing endorsement, but now that it’s out in the world and other people can give their opinions on it, let us say that the rather morbidly-monikered I Kill Foxes is doing a lot for us, and we mean a lot. It’s a six-minuter, delighting in noise and abrasive musical passages. While we can see where Iva Moskovich was coming from – the lyrics to this song come from a dark place – the way that the downbeat verses are contrasted with the speaker-destroyingly loud chorus definitely makes up for the song’s pessimism, and any lingering doubts are blown away in a chaotic noise-rock blowout before everything fades away and we’re left with Moskovich’s pleading voice: ‘When I die, time won’t be on my side’. It starts as it finishes, and there isn’t a whole lot of light in between, but its epic tendencies are impossible to resist. It’s being released as a single on September 24th via Dirty Bingo Records, a double A-side with the strangely-titled Elastic Teen Rent. Should be an interesting listen.
