It should never take too much for a song to have an impact; it’s trying too hard and appearing too earnest that keeps some artists from achieving their full potential. Knowing how to cut through all the fluff and deliver a song that’s striking for all the right reasons usually takes some practice, but Marika Hackman [Twitter/Facebook] has wasted absolutely no time in making a statement. Her debut single is a double A-side, and it’s out in two weeks. We have a stream of both songs below – namely You Come Down and Mountain Spines – as well as the video for the former, a song that eschews the bright and vibrant image that folk has become associated with in recent years for something a lot more fragile and brooding. The lyrics are immediately memorable, and also rather graphic; they help to add a spine-tingling dimension to it. You Come Down is a finely-crafted song indeed, and with Hackman setting out her stall in such thrilling fashion, it’s clear that she has a bright future ahead of her – oh, and the fact that she’s supporting Benjamin Francis Leftwich in October and November is surely going to help too.
