It was pretty obvious that I was going to fall in love with Laura Mvula on my first listen to She (the video for which is on our Video Wall). As much as I could have gone shouting from the rooftops about this one song, it takes more than a single track to introduce a new artist – and having had a listen to her upcoming EP I think I’m even more excited.
I had high hopes after Josh couldn’t stop talking about her last time we met, and I’ve only seen him this excited before over Lianne La Havas – so I knew I was in for a treat.
Mvula’s jazz-infused voice is reminiscent of the timeless cinematic classics from a near century-old era of glamour and beauty – something which her years spent at Birmingham’s Conservatoire will have had something to do with. But it isn’t just Mvula’s voice that draws you in – it’s the orchestral arrangements that sound perfectly out of pace with the modern world, forcing you to take a step back.
Maybe it’s the snow we’re getting at the moment, but I want nothing more than to wrap up in front of the fire and let Laura Mvula warm my ears. And with her currently working on an album with Tom Elmhirst of Adele production fame, expect very big things very soon coming out on RCA.
