‘Stranger’ is the distinctly more acidic sophomore effort from South Shields songbird, Natasha Haws. Gone are the candy cane sweet vocals that papered over the cracks found in the sparse percussion and gently picked acoustic guitars of debut single, ‘Stepping Stone’. Darkness has seeped into Natasha’s soul and transformed her songwriting style from a deadpan storytelling akin to Lily Allen’s into the sort of sprawling, gloomy balladry you’d expect from Fever Ray. The dreamy lulls are now inhabited by deeply atmospheric industrial clanks and sweeping chord changes that glisten like greasy oil floating forebodingly on fresh water. The spectacularly bleak promo video filmed partly submerged in the freezing North Sea by Ian West further illustrates the internal strife facing this precociously talented youngster.
