It would have to be the gig we promoted through Abacus Post at Morden Tower, a really creepy 13th century turret on the outer walls of Newcastle. We brought up Chateaux, an amazing surf rock-style quartet from Manchester and our old friends Lilliput from Sunderland headlined.
Weaving through China Town back alleys on the outskirts of the city, holding your breath to avoid inhaling the nauseating fumes being pumped out of Chinese takeaways and grimacing while rats skip over our feet; it’s not exactly the most refined venue in the North East but Morden Tower has bags of character.
Loading in the gear was a pain in the backside but once we set the bar up and the fairy lights began to glow; there was a magical atmosphere as the sell out crowd began to filter through the heavy wooden door. Chateaux performed a set crammed with addictive pop hooks, cement crumbling bass throbs and a thick wash of vocal reverb; genuinely flawless stuff considering they are only just finding their feet as a band. Lilliput were a delight as always, the packed and partisan room yelling back all the words to their twinkling folk ditties.
We’ve promoted a few gigs this year to varying degrees of success but this one went without a hitch; with a great crowd, down to earth, talented bands and a wonderful venue making it a pretty special occasion and one we’d love to replicate in 2013.
