I’ve only recently got into Chloe Howl, but it is her lyrics and vocal delivery that really pushes her to another level for me.
Last year’s Loud City Song saw Julia Holter dwell on “the loudness of gossip”. Chloe, already up for a Brit award, approaches this same subject with equal success in just one song, Rumours, doing it as Ezra Pound thought it should be done: “Good writers are those we keep the who keep the language efficient. That is to keep it accurate, keep it clear.”
Same thing in respect of her debut single No Strings, which is the clever and funny antithesis to the current pop culture message of sex mania. As to her voice, I don’t know what it is, but it brings me to mind Adele’s (I’m not thinking here of vocal potency).
So, people of the world, please spare a few minutes to hear the demo of Chloe’s new tune, This Song is Not About You, because she might just be the best yet to happen in the pop grounds this year.
