It’s almost impossible to discuss Californian duo Them Are Us Too without making comparisons to shoegaze icons, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and, most obviously, Cocteau Twins. From the echoic drum machine to the droning reverb, all bound together by the vocal glossolalia – the similarities are manifold.
Kennedy Ashlyn’s superb soprano deserves real attention and, bearing an uncanny resemblance to Elizabeth Fraser, threatens to steal the show entirely. But the beauty of Them Are Us Too is the way in which they function as a composite structure. Cash Askew’s ethereal guitar compliments the distorted synths and contrives a supremely atmospheric, spellbinding sound.
Tellingly, the band takes us back to a golden era of music whilst maintaining a keen understanding of what today’s audience wants. Nostalgia can get sickly, but Them Are Us Too temper it perfectly, leaving us pining for more.
Their forthcoming debut LP, Remain, is expected out March 24th on Dais Records and features Nine Inch Nails collaborator, Joshua Eustis, as a producer.
