A few weeks ago with little fanfare, Manchester-based multi-instrumentalist Shunya dropped a new EP, Mountain Gazer, and on it one of the most wonderfully obscure pop cuts I’ve heard in a while – Wonder N Wane.
The track rolls and trips along with a variety of squeaks, strums, and hooks, but is held together with a sinister bassline growling beneath the rich vocals of collaborator Hayley Phillipa Williams.
Shunya, or Alan Keary to his friends, may have found his first wave of fans from remixing of the likes of Whitacre and collaborating with DJ Yoda, but Wonder N Wane shows he has even more to offer when leading from the front.
