Dutch-born Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist Thomas Azier released his debut album back in 2014 on Universal, but now without the confines of a major his latest EP, ‘S t r a y’, shows a musician ready to embrace his own rough edges, something that comes through particularly well on ‘Echoes’ – the first track from the record.
The track is melancholy throughout, sweeping from the sampled stuttering strummed guitar of the verse and a wistful longing chorus, but where I think Azier really comes into his own is as the tracks destructs in the final bars, moving from the cleaner pop of his past towards something all the more interesting with a sound I can only describe a a distorted elephant’s trumpet, but is in reality Azier’s own voice distorted back through the mic on his Apple earphones.
