The singer-songwriter genre is a tricky field to break into. Granted, it is the most primitive form of writing and indeed performing, but the vast history of esteemed icons swathed in the law-like abiding love of many a music enthusiast makes standing en solo with nothing but an acoustic guitar and a fist full of words a highly sought after capability. With each lyrical phrase and musical nuance so openly exposed through the nature of the genre – we’re instinctively inclined to admire those that prosper in the singer-songwriter genre.
Now, the story telling lyric and melodic finger-picking style of Bridgend’s Rhys Lloyd Morgan clasps the attention and oozes an all-encompassing charming quality immediately reminiscent of Stephen Fretwell. And whilst referencing some of the genre’s great names is nigh on impossible, Morgan certainly does more than enough to stand out on his own here.
