(Ir)regardless of the first 31 years of my life down in humid Tampa, FL, I supposed after nearly 7 years in Capital City aka Columbus, Ohio it’s time to finally call this town my home, eh? Eh, indeed. As sad and pathetic as it sounds for a music lover, my knowledge of the local scene is not as strong as I think it should be… Hanging around local pubs is just not the way I learn about music (or really what I do at all), I’m more of a “music finds me” kinda feller and I tend to lounge aboot in coffee shops, wine bars, or at a local craft & design market…. Granted, those oh-so-glamorous haunts have introduced me to a few bands, such as Black Swans, The Kyle Sowashes, and Trains Across The Sea, it was a little art show at Junctionview that learneded me about the sweetest twee collective there ever was…. Super Desserts (MySpace).
If “sweetest twee collective” doesn’t tell you every little thing you need to know about this band, then honestly, I’m not sure if I can help you out beyond that…. Let’s see, beautiful arranged and re-arranged and arranged again shooooort songs featuring banjos, boy/girl/group vocals and almost never a drum (though Justin did whip out a big ol’ bass drum for one song they played at a local indie-craft store called Whollycraft. Yeah… In a store that sells local handmade crafts. Just sayin’) singing bittersweet tunes of more often than not, woe.
Over the past year I’ve developed quite the crush on, first the lead female singer, Eve (she’s rather adorable), then the rest of this wonderful band of rapscallions! It’s kinda impossible not to….

When I think “away” and “favourite” I think Decemberists, as I’m pretty sure that band was designed for me. BUT, the Walrus was thinking of bands that need more air time and that certainly is not my beloved Ds! So, with that in mind, how about we head north, all the way up to that bastian (sp?) of independent music, O Canada and a rock band that built one amazing concept album, Hard Drugs (MySpace) & their self-titled gem! Hard Drugs (the album) is a tale of Aline & Lloyd. She’s a prostitute with an abusive pimp, Slim. Lloyd is her drug-dealing lover. Together they concoct a plan to rid the world of her pimp and run away together, start a new life.
Well, you can’t just go around killin’ pimps without reprocussions, so as you can imagine, shit goes down. I don’t want to give the story away, but it’s a wonderful blues, roots, alt.country, & rock album that is best listened to in one giant loud listen. If, come the end of the album, you don’t want to run up to your nearest street ho and give her a big ol’ hug…. well, you may just be broke in yer heart.
