In a moment of utter procrastination last week, I decided to troll through some of the hundreds of largely unknown bands who have added me on MySpace since I got it last month. Well, let me tell you something: if you want reams of decent music, MySpace is not the place to go. After thirty five minutes of utter garbage, or even worse, indifferent attempts, I began to find some good stuff. Here’s a round up of a few bands I really liked…
Susie Ledge: This South London songstress is brilliant. She pens her own tunes, sings and plays guitar; earlier this year, she teamed up with Mitch Glover (KOSHEEN) and Ross Antonio Gill (REPLENISH) to form a three-piece pop/rock band, with whom she is playing two gigs in July. Listen if you like…Natalie Imbruglia.
Susie Ledge – When You’re Gone
Rubella: Lyrically astute girl rock. Rubella are a typically fun and musically provocative three-piece from London, who are gigging like hell around the city currently. Having only been in existence since October, they were recently interviewed by BBC 6 Live – pretty impressive for a band who have only just celebrated their sixth month birthday. Listen if you like…Garbage.
J Minus: Pure American alt. rock; reminiscient of the nineties’ wave of rather underground alternative artists. J Minus are one of those bands you listen to once or twice, then end up singing at the top of your lungs in the shower for the next week, until you are forced to listen to them again (in a good way, of course). Listen if you like…the Goo Goo Dolls.
Olly The Octopus: This artist is everything you could wish an artist to be – talented, politically aware, fun and opinionated. Having recently rocked the boat in quite a serious manner at the G20 protest, that’s after terrorizing Boris Johnson supporters last year, Olly The Octopus is playing a number of gigs throughout the South of England this summer – what will he do next? Listen if you like…Frank Turner.
Olly The Octopus – The Gangster’s Picnic
Enjoy!
