Musically speaking, Leeds is known for a number of things, but anthemic pop-rock hasn’t really been one of them, until now at least. All that seems set to change now that The Chevin are on the scene. The quartet released an EP, entitled Champion, at the start of the year, and are already starting to make themselves heard in the UK – not to mention in the US, which is, as many bands of this ilk still don’t seem to realise, an important market to try and break into. It’s also quite tough to make it over there, but The Chevin have been building up quite a head of steam, and look set to capitalise on that with the release of their debut album in August.
That album will be entitled Borderland, and its lead single is a soaring, uplifting song called Drive, the video for which can be seen above. At times, vocalist Coyle Girelli sounds like a more reserved Matt Bellamy, with the kind of powerful voice that he doesn’t truly unleash until the song’s climax. Around him, the band create an extremely melodic, hook-laden, absolutely delightful song, whose musical power is balanced by fragile lyrics, and a palpable sense of emotion that informs the album as a whole. It sounds like Drive, which is released as a single next week, could be just the tip of the iceberg, because The Chevin are prepared to put themselves firmly on the map.
