Generally, if one goes on the X Factor and gets themselves noticed, the smart career move is to NOT win it. Only one winner in the show’s 8-year history has gone on to realise their potential (Leona Lewis in 2006). The success rate is very low. Aiden Grimshaw [Twitter/Facebook] finished ninth in 2010, but it’s worked out well for him, because now he’s signed to RCA and has an album out on August 20th called Misty Eye. He set out his stall with the excellent Is This Love? last month, and as followed it with a strings-soaked beauty entitled Curtain Call. ‘All I need is all your love,’ he pleads over a confident R&B groove and a soaring melody, seeming to have changed tack from Is This Love?‘s ruminations on a difficult break-up. The single, which precedes the album by a week, also features a powerful performance from Sherelle McKenzie, the sister of a certain Timothy McKenzie (otherwise known as Labrinth) who has provided backing vocals in other spots on the album. She and Grimshaw work well together on a song that makes life after the X Factor seem like a walk in the park. If he had won, he would have had an album rushed out, but instead, he’s been allowed to take his time, and looks set to be rewarded handsomely.
