What makes this song so good is not the fact that it has an immediate impact. That certainly helps, but the real cherry on top for the first single to be taken from Paul Cook and the Chronicles’ [Twitter/Facebook] brilliant debut album, Candlelight, is that it features one of the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful melodies I’ve heard all year, the kind of tune that stays with you long after the song’s finished. The album itself is called Volume One, and arrives on August 27th. If you’re fond of simple and direct songs with a real emotional heft, it’ll be right up your street. Its first single (released on August 6th) is merely the tip of the iceberg. Paul Cook himself possesses a voice that’s audibly filled with longing, and when he finally arrives at the chorus around two minutes in (‘Can you be my candlelight, ’cause I’ve been so blind?’), the effect is devastating. For a song so layered, the most surprising thing is that it sounds so astonishingly fragile. The album’s similarly hard-hitting. Buckle up.
