This band are one of my favourite find of this year and a record that I have had on infatuated repeat for a while now. Nomadic Firs (twitter) is the brainchild solo project of Ryan Boos who up until 2005 was a house DJ blaring out techno beats to the masses. He now subside in Knoxville, Tennessee, with his wife and a zoo full of animals cultivating his own farm; somewhat living the easy life.
This idealistic lifestyle mixed with his darker past as a DJ has unquestionably influenced the assembly of sound on the Nomadic Firs self titled debut album. His blissed out folksy pop melodies are the perfect collage of chilled out vibes and upbeat layered loops, culminating in what can only be described as a floaty and tender dream like paradise.
But it’s not all fun down on the farm, Ryan does have a more serious side to his music. Before picking up sticks and moving to the country, he left behind in his home town of Michigan a shady past of drugs, fist fights and broken relationships, it seems his move to Tennessee has mellowed him out, but the darker side to his personality shines through in the downbeat tempo and deep beats of his track i94.
The band have just released the video for their new single Forever, a refined radiant beauty of a track, but I would recommend first listening to their single Vines whose vibrant harmonies feels like a burst of sunshine. While we are trapped in this perpetual tango between winter and summer this song bring to life some much needed summer vibes and as Ryan Boos vocalises we “all deserve a little bit of sunshine”
The album is available to buy now from Crash Symbol Records or through their Bandcamp page as a digital download, or if you want something a little more retro it’s also available on cassette tape including of course its own knitted case. What more do I need to say to persuade you.
