My quest to find new and attention grabbing music is a never ending one. I can spend countless hours searching trough the blogosphere and music streaming website such Soundcloud and Bandcamp for a good tune; not only for my own listening pleasure but for the ears and minds of our dedicated Blue Walrus readers to enjoy.
My latest rummaging had me stumble across London based band The Magic Gang (Facebook) via Shiny Shiny New. Currently unsigned to a label all l I can tell you about this band can be summed up in a few sentences. I couldn’t even tell you what they look like; the picture for this post is a screen grab from their very cool video featuring stills from the movie Mallrats. Despite this lack of info I am firm believer in letting the music speak for itself. We don’t need to know the bits in-between, heck we don’t even need to know the simple fundamentals of first names because if the music is bad then that stuff doesn’t really matter. The Magic Gang however need not worry as Bruises, the bands first and only single, is killer of a track. It’s full of acid wash nostalgia and slow 90’s grunge distortion It’s kick of slacker melancholy is like listening to the musical equivalent of cult TV show My So Called Life. (I think this band may have taken inspiration or at least have a fondness for the dungaree and Nintendo playing decade) Its surfer rift flows as smoothly as the motion of the ocean and those burst of retro guitar growls add to its vintage throw back authenticity.
Bruises is available as a free download via The Magic Gangs Soundcoud.
