This is the place where I would usually write something glib or some kind of pretentious over-analysis but I don’t really feel like doing that. That’s because sometimes a song is so completely lovely, is such a perfect little snapshot, that it says everything that’s needed all on it’s own.
Monument Valley, the alias of London based Ned younger, has been making waves with his own brand of delicately constructed, atmospheric songwriting and even just released the second single, ‘Walking Home’ from his debut LP. But I’m a contrarian dick so instead of talking about that I want to talk about a country & western cover he’s done.
In his version of country legend Patsy Cline’s ‘She’s Got You’, Younger has stripped it to its bare bones and leaves us with no choice but to listen intently to every word that’s sung, every subtle vocal inflection that brings the tragedy of the lyrics into stark focus. It’s a performance that feels so raw and personal it’s almost voyeuristic.
That’s it, that’s all I have to say, I just like it. I could have picked his new single but I didn’t, I picked this one because I like it. Ok? Just go listen to it. You can download for free HERE.
